Coromandel Gold Mining Debate

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Last year while chopping some wood down the garage I found this old newspaper (the other side of this page was about Ronald Reagan campaign for the 1981 US elections, not sure how this one managed to stay there all these years…

Coromandel Gold Mining

my Coromandel mates told me this summer its up on the agenda again (see: Coromandel WatchDog).

We lived in the Coromandel for over two years and had great two weeks in this beautiful green bush on Xmas,  will be back as every summer next year!!

Reduce Latency and load time using JavaScript Frameworks

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

During the last four years I have been using JavaScript frameworks across many of the sites I have been developing, I found the Mootools syntax and object oriented approach to be the most intuitive to code with and JQuery to be the easiest to integrate with additional existing JavaScript libraries (with its excellent NoConflict mode).

When it comes to creating front-end functionality for integrating with ASP.NET, JQuery is definitively the framework of choice with its full Visual Studio integration and recent Microsoft’s support.

One of the main drives for utilising JQuery will be latency optimisation, where the entire load for functionality and client side validation could be offloaded for CDN delivery, reducing network delivery overhead.

This approach could be demonstrated with a recent implementation I have been involved with (see below) :

where a heavily requested travel sites is optimised for a quick initial load time with extensive client side validation, reducing server load and minimizing network communication (and its potential latency overhead).

New Zealand Interactive Route Map by The KiwiExperience

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I had the honor to complete a web mapping project for the KiwiExperience which is New Zealand’s major operator of bus passes for travelers and backpackers.

This mapping solution included mashing up operators information and available bus routes throughout New Zealand with spatial data provided using the Google Maps API.

One of the main achievements in this project was to provide a rich fast user experience while distributing content over several continents for users across the world, this was done by following the latency requirements I have posted last year through my latency research ensuring the optimisation of South Pacific content for international customers.

With the latest take over of Sun Microsystems by Oracle and the global economic slow down, the ability of web content originated from AU/NZ data centers to provide competitive user experience world wide will highly depend on utilization of cloud computing and resources.

A good example will be solutions where content is stored and maintained locally but where possible combined with resources available by content provider positioned closer to the Internets backbone (Tier I providers neighbors) such as maps and media available by Google, Akamai, Flickr and Data stores such as amazon (AWS/EC2).

Being involved in several VOIP integration projects in its early days I have noticed the effect of latency on voice quality and the ability to minimise this effect by locating the VOIP termination servers (where the signal turns from IP to PSTN circuit i.e. traditional analog line) as close as possible to the major target audience.

Following the rule of “make the product at its source but serve it from as close as possible to its customer destination.” has been used by traditional supply chains for centuries and still applies to the latest web architectures for maximizing your clients user experience.

Update October 2009:

The site has also won a Microsoft NZ Collaboration Award ;o)

The Coromandel Gold Trail

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Many travelers to New Zealand I met over the years found themselves a few day away from their flight out of NZ (or just arrived into Auckland’s airport and looking for a short relaxing three day itinerary.

Less then 1.5 hours from Auckland the Coromandel Peninsula offers some of New Zealand finest beaches true bush experience and historical gold mining sites and monuments.

Combine a short term campervan hire, a couple of beautiful waterfront camp sites and only three or more days and get the real New Zealand country experience.

The itinerary below will take you through a mixture of these and recommended for at least three days starting and ending Auckland City:

Possible short bush walks with a real feel of the NZ rain-forest and old mining sites will be posted here soon…

This Post will be dedicated to demonstrating budget travel options utilizing low rate Tasman airfares and AU/NZ based campervans and motorhomes.

suggested solutions will aim to provide packages based on a two weeks holiday period that includes a mix of nature and city vacation experience

The first package is the New South Wales Rain Forest Experience shown below and done for less then $2000 AUD in 12 days providing a great mixture of vibrant Australian cities (Sydney and Brisbane) with a real feel of the Australian beach, bush and outback, daily travel distances has been calculated (and tested) for family traveling with a 2 year old baby and suits young couples (more surfing) and families (less driving) on the same budget and trip duration.
